Have You Failed At Something? Fine, Then Do Something Else

When something goes wrong, there is always a downside to get you back on the right track.
Do you have plans, goals, ideals or results you want to achieve? Do you get angry when things don’t go your way?
If so, you will get a simple yet powerful insight from this article.
The source of this idea is the book “Discipline Equals Freedom” by Jocko Willink. The idea is very simple. Jocko believes it’s useless to complain when things go wrong, and he says:

“…when things go bad, there will be some good things to come from it.”

I’m sure if you’re reading this article, you know that complaining is a bad thing. This is one of the first things you read from the moment you start reading such articles.

So why am I citing this idea of Jocko?
Rather than giving people the advice to “complain”, Jocko says we need more than that to truly change our behavior.

Complaining is a habit. And if you want to stop complaining, you have to approach it like changing a habit.

So if you get discouraged when things go wrong or you keep complaining about everything that goes wrong, follow this method. It goes on like this.
Whenever something goes wrong, focus on the good things about the situation.
As you can see, Jocko didn’t openly say he wasn’t complaining. Instead, he says something good can come out of something bad.
But that requires you to focus on the good first. How do we do this? Always saying GOOD when something goes wrong.
Jocko gives an example in this regard:

● Ah, that job you wanted at the company was cancelled? Good. We can focus on someone else.
● Didn’t get a promotion? Good. This means more time to heal.
● Is your business unfunded? Good. We own more companies.
● Not accepted for the job you wanted? Good. Go out, gain more experience, build a better resume.
● Are you defeated? Good. We learned.
● Unexpected problems? Good. We have the opportunity to find a solution.

You probably get the idea. Every disadvantage has an advantage.
If you are thinking about how you can change the way you think, this is an excellent habit to adapt.

Practice the little things. Emphasize the big things.

Small things are easy to get over, right? For example, who cares if it rains today? Or did you break your coffee mug? You will get a new one! Anyone can do these little things.
But the problem is that when big things happen, we completely forget the “I’ll never complain again” attitude. And that’s definitely a problem!
When you want to live a certain lifestyle, you can’t just do it the way you want.

So always be more concerned with big things. How do you stand when there are major failures? Are you still complaining? Or have you trained yourself enough to always focus on the good?
This will not happen in an instant. It can take a few years on average to get really good at it.
When you achieve this and things go wrong, you will begin to see this negative state as a trigger to do something else. And the way to create this trigger is the kind of way Jocko formulated it above.

Train yourself to think:

(X is a bad thing) (Y is a good / beneficial / positive action)
Do Y when X.
This is not a Nobel Prize winning theory.
I just found this exercise very helpful.
Keep going until you find something that really works. When you do that, you won’t even have time to complain.
