From TRT Archive: 19 May Youth and Sports Day Celebrations from Past to Present

May 19, 1919 is considered the day the struggle for independence began. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk went to Samsun on the Bandırma Ferry that day and ignited the struggle that would form the foundations of the Republic of Turkey. May 19 is celebrated as “Veterans Day” for the first time in Samsun in 1926. On May 24, 1935, it became official as “Atatürk’s Day”.
Beşiktaş Founding Member Ahmet Fetgeri Aşeni, who suggested that this holiday be dedicated to both youth and athletes, after the celebration of Beşiktaş Sports Club with the participation of Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe athletes in Fenerbahçe Stadium, proposes the name “19 May Youth and Sports Day”. With the proposal that was also approved by Atatürk, its name became official with the law dated 20 June 1938 as “Youth and Sports Day”. After the September 12, 1980 coup, it became the “Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day” as we know it now.
“Youth! Young people who undertake to realize my future ambitions! I am very pleased and happy that one day I will leave this country to a youth like you who understand me” – Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK
