At what stage of your personal development are you?

Personal development is an abstract subject and means different things to different people. And there is no single, popular way to measure it. So what does “personal development” mean? The word progress implies that there is progress. So what stage of this progression are you at right now? Successful self-help writer Darius Foroux answers that question for you. Let’s see together.

What is personal development?

Personal development, I think, are activities that will make you a reliable and useful person. Evolving towards someone you can trust. To me, this is the modern version of philosophy. Philosophy in ancient Rome was mostly a practical pursuit. There were real schools where you could practice the art of being a better person. Along the way, we turned philosophy into an academic pursuit.
It turned into an analysis of who said what and why. The word philosophy comes from the Greek word φιλοσοφία, meaning love of wisdom. Historically, a philosopher was a practitioner of the knowledge he had. Well-known ancient philosophers such as Aristotle , Socrates , Seneca , Epictetus, Buddha, Confucius were all practitioners of their own knowledge, applying their own counsel. This trend is 19. continued into the century.
Modern philosophers such as William James and Sigmund Freud were all practitioners of philosophy. He often had other jobs as well; James was a psychologist and later became a teacher, while Freud was a neurologist. However, 20. In the 19th century, philosophers became the spokesmen of knowledge. Philosophy became an academic career and it didn’t matter whether you applied your knowledge or not. Why is it important to know this history? We all have a thirst for wisdom, so we have to get it from somewhere.
So in the last century, when philosophy began to change, other people filled that void. Who were these people? Napoleon Hill, Wallace D. Wattles, Earl Nightingale, Jim Rohn and all the others currently active in the personal development field… Instead of going to ancient philosophy school, we join online communities, read blogs, and learn from each other. The goal is to be a better, more useful, more reliable person.

The four stages of personal development

I have identified four stages of personal development. Being aware of these stages helps us understand where we are on our journey to becoming a better person. By understanding where you are, you can take the necessary steps for your personal development.

1) Discovery

All improvement comes from pain. We never start without a reason to pursue self-realization. Every person goes through a period in his life that starts with darkness and continues with challenge. This is where most of us discover the power of self-improvement. I’ve always been interested in productivity, business and personal growth. But I didn’t take it seriously until 2014 – 2015. I was going through personal hardships like loss, lack of career perspective, separation, back pain. None of these challenges were great on their own, but difficult in combination. At some point you start looking for answers. At the same time, my brother was also going through this phase. That’s why we shared books with each other and inspired each other more.

2) Consumption

When you explore the world of personal growth, you become hopeful. “Hey, I can change my life. I can be better, stronger, more reliable.” So you go through a total consumption frenzy. You read books, browse blogs, listen to podcasts, watch documentaries; your thirst for knowledge is endless. While you are at this stage, keep drinking from the well of knowledge.

3) Application

I spent about 18 months consuming everything I could. I mean this literally. All day long I read, listened and watched inspiring things. I read 2 to 3 books a week, kept a journal for at least an hour a day, and listened to podcasts or interviews every hour. But you can’t do this forever. At some point, you want to live what you’ve learned. So you begin to apply it to your personal life, to your health, to your career, to your work. You start changes and you embody the knowledge you have acquired.

4) to teach

Once you have successfully learned and applied your knowledge, you want to share it with others. This could be your family, friends, co-workers, team or strangers. Not everyone who goes through the stages of personal development becomes a teacher by profession, but everyone who develops himself wants to inspire others to do the same. You don’t have to tell others to improve. Just by setting the right example, you inspire others to do the same. To me, that is the true purpose of the teacher, and that sums up the four stages of self-development. If we’re lucky, we may spend most of our lives in the final phase, but all phases are wonderful places too.
