TL;DR:<\/strong> The most repeated fact about burnout is that it is rising and that it means disengaged, exhausted workers. The global data supports half of that and contradicts the other half. Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace 2026, built on 141,444 employed respondents in 160-plus countries surveyed through 2025, reports 40 percent of employees experiencing significant daily stress, 20 percent engaged, and 34 percent thriving in life. But when you place all ten world regions side by side, stress and engagement barely move together: our calculation across the ten regions gives r = -0.14, effectively no relationship. Life evaluation and stress move very slightly in the same direction (r = +0.28), while life evaluation tracks daily sadness strongly and negatively (r = -0.72). The regions with the longest working hours report the least stress: the ILO puts long-hours exposure in Asia and the Pacific at 46.7 percent of workers versus 11.0 percent in Europe and Central Asia, while Gallup puts daily stress at 25 percent in Southeast Asia and 39 percent in Europe. There is a specific kind of article that gets written every few months. It cites one alarming percentage, calls it the burnout rate, and builds a case for whatever intervention the author already believed in.<\/p>\n

The problem is not that the percentage is fake. The problem is that almost none of these figures measure burnout. They measure stress, or engagement, or intent to leave, or self-diagnosed exhaustion, and those four things behave very differently from one another once you look across enough countries.<\/p>\n
