A Data-Led 2026 Guide

Summary. Interior architecture is a four-year undergraduate degree that teaches how to make interior spaces functional, safe and aesthetic. According to YÖK Atlas data from the 2026 YKS guide (YKS is Turkey’s central university entrance exam), Turkey’s university system offers the field under two separate names, “İç Mimarlık” (Interior Architecture), admitted with the SAY (science-maths score type), and “İç Mimarlık ve Çevre Tasarımı” (Interior Architecture and Environmental Design), admitted with the EA (equal-weight score type), across 225 program rows at 89 universities with 3,895 places. 66.5% of these places are at foundation universities (Turkey’s private, non-profit universities); in architecture the figure is 30.2%. The occupation is more technical than expected: the US occupational database ONET ranks interior designers’ three most important tasks as safe plans that meet accessibility requirements for people with disabilities, computer-aided construction drawings and researching codes. According to the US Census Bureau’s 2024 microdata, 39.3% of people working as interior designers are self-employed. CEO move: make the choice of degree like a portfolio decision; weigh the score type, the type of university, the tuition and how easily you could move into neighboring occupations together. Student move:* from your first year, build a small portfolio that shows knowledge of codes, drawing software and working with clients.

Whether a diploma or a portfolio is the stronger signal is the subject of the comparison of certificates, portfolios and degrees. The most problematic part was the salary section: figures such as an average of 7,000 TRY in the public sector, a starting salary of 3,000 TRY in the private sector, 10,000 TRY with experience and 30,000 to 160,000 TRY per project were unsourced and given at 2021 prices. Because no verifiable series showing the earnings of interior architects in Turkey could be found, these figures were removed and not replaced.

Also removed were the unsourced course list (replaced by one university’s published curriculum), the statement “an aptitude test at some universities” (it could not be verified in 2026 central placement data), the generalization “job opportunities depend on the construction sector” (no data could be found to test it for Turkey), anecdotal advice, an old image and a clickable link for university preferences. The number placed is given as it appears in the data source and may exceed the places by a few people in some rows. The median success rank is calculated only from rows with placed students.

Five conclusions emerge from the table.

The degree really is four years, but language preparation is added. 222 of the 225 rows have a four-year duration of study; the exception is a university abroad with a three-year program. 76 rows have a one-year compulsory foreign language preparatory year, and the guide states explicitly that this year is not included in the duration of study. In an English-taught program, the total can in practice stretch to five years.

There is no aptitude test in central placement. All 225 rows are in the central placement table and admit students with SAY or EA scores; none of the rows mentions an aptitude test in its condition notes. Whether any program admits students through an aptitude test outside central placement could not be verified.

Architecture’s success rank requirement does not apply to interior architecture. For comparison, the architecture group was also examined: 176 of the 194 architecture rows require a minimum success rank of 250,000 in the relevant score type for a candidate to list the program as a preference. None of the interior architecture rows has such a requirement. Indeed, in interior architecture programs at foundation universities, the rank of the last placed candidate can exceed one million.

Training is concentrated in foundation universities. Total places in interior architecture (3,895) are almost the same as in architecture (3,903), but the distribution is reversed: 66.7% of architecture places are at state universities, while 66.5% of interior architecture places are at foundation universities. For foundation programs, the median of the 2026-2027 annual tuition listed in the guide (undiscounted, VAT included) is 1,200,000 TRY; across 56 university-program combinations the range is 308,000 to 2,033,987 TRY.

Demand looks strong. In 2026, the number placed in interior architecture reached 96.4% of places; every SAY row at state and foundation universities was filled. In architecture the fill rate is 87.6%, and 71.3% at foundation universities; the gap may stem partly from the success rank requirement, but the data do not show the cause.

Two additional notes: 26 of the 225 rows carry an accreditation record (TAPLAK in 14, AQAS in 12). Beyond the bachelor’s level, there is also a two-year associate degree program, “İç Mekan Tasarımı” (Interior Space Design), which admits students with the TYT (basic proficiency test) score: 90 rows at 59 universities, 2,596 places and an 89.5% fill rate.

How long is the degree, and what are the courses?

The degree takes four years, plus one preparatory year in English-taught programs. The ACS field list has no separate “interior design” code; the documents consulted do not show which code interior design graduates are recorded under, but some of them are most likely within code 6004.

This occupation is not limited by the name of the diploma. 29.3% of workers have no bachelor’s degree, 33.1% come from visual and performing arts fields (60xx) and 7.4% from architecture; 30.2% earned a bachelor’s degree in some other field. The BLS makes a note consistent with this table: it writes that entrants typically need a bachelor’s degree in any field and that the most common field is fine arts. For comparison, the ACS data on people working as architects were also examined: 49.6% of them are architecture graduates and only 8.8% have no bachelor’s degree. Architecture is a field with a tight link between degree and occupation; interior design is far more permeable.

The second big difference is in how people work. According to the ACS, 39.3% (±3.5) of interior designers are self-employed: 21.2% in unincorporated and 18.1% in incorporated businesses of their own. Among architects the share is 14.2%. In the BLS employment matrix, the self-employed share is 26.4%; because the two sources define self-employment differently, the rates should not be compared one to one. Still, running your own business is one of the main paths in interior design. To weigh this path, you can use the framework in freelancing vs full-time employment.

No verifiable series could be found showing which occupations interior architecture graduates in Turkey work in, or how many of them start their own business; the US results are a reference.

What do we know about pay and the job market?

According to the BLS, interior designers held about 97,100 jobs in the US in 2025. On the same date, the median for all occupations was $50,980 and for art and design workers $58,240. Employment is projected to grow 3% between 2025 and 2035, about as fast as the average for all occupations; about 7,700 openings are projected each year, and according to the BLS many of them result from the need to replace workers who move to other occupations or retire.

The old article said the occupation was “especially dependent on the construction sector”; US data show that the relationship is more indirect. According to the BLS, 30% of interior designers work in specialized design services, 26% are self-employed, 14% work in architectural and engineering services, 12% in retail and only 6% in construction. The reasons the BLS gives for demand are likewise renovation projects, growing interest in building codes and accessibility standards. Because no data could be found to test this relationship for Turkey, the old generalization was not carried over.

Two caveats: BLS wage data do not cover the self-employed, so the median does not describe the income of this group, which makes up more than a third of the occupation. The gap by industry is also large: the median is $78,340 in architectural and engineering services and $50,560 in retail. Because there is no verifiable salary series for Turkey, this article gives no salary figure for Turkey.

Career path map: neighboring occupations and AI exposure

O*NET lists 20 related occupations for interior designers, ranked through expert review (the rank group is shown in parentheses in the table). Relatedness tier: ONET 31.0, Related Occupations file, occupation code 27-1025.00. Other columns: BLS, AI exposure categories and 2025-35 employment projections. Wages exclude the self-employed.*

Three conclusions emerge from the map.

Most neighboring paths pay better but do not grow faster. Six of the ten closest occupations have a higher median wage than interior designers, but only three have faster projected growth; graphic designers and mechanical drafters are projected to shrink. Art direction, the highest-paid neighbor, requires at least five years of experience in a related occupation according to the BLS. Architects’ median wage is 1.48 times that of interior designers, but for this occupation the BLS lists on-the-job training of the internship or residency type alongside a bachelor’s degree, and according to the ACS half of architects are architecture graduates. A career should be managed not like a ladder but like a portfolio: which neighboring path you can move into depends on the skills you build today.

Exposure is not an employment forecast. The BLS combines five public sources (three theoretical exposure measures and two observed usage measures) and sorts 831 occupations into four groups: low, medium, high and very high. Interior designers are in the “high” group, which covers 24.8% of occupations. Nine of the 13 occupations in the arts and design occupational group are also “high”. According to the BLS, an exposure category is not a forecast of employment growth or decline, is not a forecast of workers being replaced and does not distinguish between automation and augmentation; the theoretical sources consider AI as it stood in mid-2023 at the latest.

A visual occupation has a blind spot. The BLS writes that most of the sources focus on language models and do not cover image or video generation. Because visualization is an important part of the work in interior architecture, the category may not capture this effect. As image generation gets cheaper, code compliance, construction drawings and coordination, which sit at the top of the O*NET list, move to the center of the responsibility that stays with people.

Which skills gain value over time?

The table below is not a measurement but a CEOtudent editorial framework; each row is tied to a basis in the data above.

Skill

Data basis

Student move

Codes and accessibility

Tasks 1 and 3 in O*NET; according to the BLS, interest in this area can create employment

Report the accessibility problems of a public space in two pages

Technical drawing and modeling (CAD, BIM)

Task 2 in O*NET; according to the BLS, most drawings are made with CAD

Deliver the same space as both a construction drawing and a 3D model

Defining needs and budget with the client

Tasks 4 and 5 in O*NET

Interview a volunteer client and write a design brief

Cost, schedule and site coordination

BLS task list; tasks 6-8 in O*NET

Prepare a materials list, cost and schedule for a small renovation

Sustainable materials

Task 14 in O*NET; a separate specialty in the BLS

Compare two materials on energy, maintenance and cost

Starting a business and pricing

39.3% self-employed in the ACS

Price one project separately at an hourly rate and at a fixed fee

Auditing AI output

BLS sources do not cover image generation

Write down three buildability errors in an AI-generated image of a space

The first two rows are the basics for entering the occupation; the last two carry option value for starting your own business or moving into neighboring paths.
